Area Rug Cleaning for Grand Rapids & West Michigan
A good area rug takes a lot: foot traffic, spilled coffee, the dog's favorite nap spot. Since 1982, Rugs by Shahan has cleaned area rugs by hand for homes in Grand Rapids, Holland and across West Michigan. We pick your rug up for free, wash it with no harsh detergents or chemicals, and bring it back clean.
Our area rug cleaning
An area rug collects more than it shows. Grit settles deep in the pile, spills and pet accidents soak through to the back, and a quick clean on the floor only reaches the top. We take the rug away and clean all of it.
- At our facility, not on your floor. It's where a rug can be cleaned properly.
- By hand, with traditional methods, the same care we give fine oriental rugs.
- No harsh detergents or chemicals, so nothing is left in the fibers when the rug comes home. Safe for kids and pets.
- Any size, from a hallway runner to a room-size rug.
- Picked up and brought back free, anywhere in West Michigan.
What counts as an area rug
Any rug that isn't fixed to the floor. Most fall into three groups:
- Wool area rugs. Machine-made or hand-tufted, with a wool pile. Wool wears well and cleans well, but it doesn't like heat or harsh products.
- Synthetic area rugs. Nylon, polyester and polypropylene (olefin). They are tough and colorfast, but they hold oily soil and odors.
- Natural-fiber rugs. Jute, sisal and seagrass. They can shrink or brown when they get too wet.
High quality area rugs are often just as delicate as oriental rugs. If your rug is hand-knotted or a fine oriental, see oriental rug cleaning →
What we clean, and what to ask about first
We clean most area rugs. A few kinds are worth mentioning when you call:
- Hand-tufted rugs have a backing glued on with latex, which can break down and smell if it's soaked.
- Viscose ("art silk") rugs can lose their sheen or stain with water.
- Jute and sisal rugs can shrink or brown.
Tell us what your rug is made of when you call, and we'll tell you honestly what to expect before we pick it up.
Pet accidents and odors
Pet accidents are one of the most common reasons people call us. Urine soaks through the pile into the rug's foundation, and often into the pad and floor underneath. A surface clean can lift the mark, but the smell tends to come back, especially on humid days. Washing the whole rug by hand, front and back, deals with it where it is.
We wash with no harsh detergents or chemicals, so the rug comes home safe for your kids and for the pet who caused the problem in the first place.

Frequently asked questions
How much does area rug cleaning cost?
It depends on the rug's size, type and condition. Call with those details and we'll give you a price over the phone.
Where can I take my area rug to be cleaned?
You don't need to take it anywhere. We pick it up from your home anywhere in Grand Rapids, Holland and West Michigan, clean it by hand and bring it back, all with free pickup and delivery.
Can I drop my rug off?
We don't take drop-offs. Every rug is picked up from your home, free.
Can you clean my rug in my home?
No. We pick your rug up and clean it by hand at our facility, which lets us do the job properly. Then we bring it back.
Can I vacuum my area rug?
Yes. Regular vacuuming removes pet hair, dirt and other dry particles, which reduces wear on the rug.
What is making my rug look dirty?
Usually one of three things: spots and stains, loose surface litter like pet hair, or oil and grease. The longer soil sits, the harder it is to remove.
